The IEEE Power and Energy Society or PES, formerly known as the IEEE Power Engineering Society, is the pioneer society established by IEEE, known as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. The primary motive of IEEE Power and Energy Society includes all scientific and engineering studies on electric power and energy. A leading provider of scientific and engineering data and information on electric power and energy, Power and Energy Society aims at developing the most effective power and energy solutions for the betterment of society.
PES: Field of Interest
The Society’s constitution clearly defines its Field of Interest that includes research, planning, development, design, construction, application, installation and operation of materials, apparatus, equipment, structures and systems for the safe and reliable distribution, transmission, conversion, measurement and control of electric energy. Thus, the society maintains the development of engineering standards by providing essential and updated information and instructions to the public, authorities, and scientific, technical, educational and other institutions.
History of the IEEE Power and Energy Society
The IEEE Power and Energy Society was founded by collaborating several societies into the IEEE. After so many buzzes, the IEEE was formed in the year of 1963 by the collaboration of two leading organizations IRE and AIEE. In 1970, the key portion of IRE became the IEEE Computer Society and the key portion of AIEE became the IEEE Power Engineering Society. The IEEE Power Engineering Society arrived at the current name, the IEEE Power and Energy Society, on April 22, 2008. The Power and Energy Society is the world’s largest platform that enables exchange and sharing of the latest technological developments in the field of electric power. Besides developing standards to direct development and creation of equipment and systems, the society aims also at educating member industry experts and the public. Power and Energy Society aligns with leading members in this field.
Governance Documents adopted by PES
Power and Energy Society has clearly summed down its constitution and rules in the following documents:
Constitution: The constitution adopted by Power and Energy Society clearly defines various articles that collectively form the rules and regulations for the governance of the society.
By-Laws: By-laws define parliamentary rules and regulations, which are necessary to run and administer the society.
Functions undertaken by PES
IEEE sister societies include the Industrial Electronics Society, the Power Electronics Society, the Industry Applications Society and also the Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society. Additionally, the IEEE Power Electronics Society publishes a good number of journals mentioned below:
IEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion
IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery
IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy
IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid
IEEE Transactions on Power Systems
The society also publishes a magazine named the IEEE Power and Energy Magazine. Moreover, the society supports several conferences focusing at its Field of Interest.
Various annual seminars and conferences, conducted by Power and Energy Society worldwide, attract a huge number of scientists, authorities, institutions, corporate houses, individuals and other members from public.
